Brief Club History (provided by Leo Ktenidis)
Black and Ambers:
West Hallam has a long history of football. The Black and Ambers were the local team in the early 1920’s. The team got changed at the Punchbowl and played at Beech Lane Recreation Ground. At one match in the 1920’s there was a total eclipse of the sun. It became so dark that the match had to be cancelled.
Senior Team:
The senior team continued to thrive and promote football in the village, alongside
the juniors. An interesting dig into the archives for the 1984-
Some more photos have been contributed by Derek Blockley who has had a long association with the club and is currently our Club Secretary (many thanks Derek), if anyone can date them please let us know.
Junior Football Team
The junior team was formed in 1980 and known as the West Hallam Junior Rams. It started out as a coaching club and was managed by Roger Green and Phil Kerry. They then started playing friendly matches, and so many people were getting involved that extra help was needed. This was provided by two parents Chris and Christine Shaw. The Club in 1982 joined the Junior Rams League and it was decided that sponsors were needed to allow the club to survive. John and Carol Hart were approached and agreed to sponsor the club. John sadly died a few years ago, but Carol has kept her interest in the Club and is the current Club President.
After a couple of years in the Junior Rams League the under 11’s joined the Saturday morning Derby League, and soon after that all the teams moved to the Derby League.
The name of the Club was then changed to West Hallam Junior Football Club. Shortly after this Roger Green and Phil Kerry decided to call it a day. But they left the club in a healthy position and thanks to many parents still being involved, the club is still going from strength to strength. At present the club is running teams from under 6’s to under 18’s.
